Calling all photographers: 10 photography competitions accepting submissions right now

Winning worldwide competitions has kickstarted international careers for some of the most successful photographers of our time. You can get the chance to put your work in front of industry legends, earn cash prizes, get your work published in magazines or photography books, and get the recognition that could land you your next major project. 

It’s not always easy to keep on top of themes, deadlines and submission applications, so we’ve collected here 10 competitions that are open right now. Whether you’re a pro, a student, or simply a phone photography enthusiast, there’s something for everyone. It’s time to dig out that portfolio!

    1. MONOCHROME PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS 2021

    The Monochrome Awards is primarily aimed at people of whom photography is a passion and a way of life. It is a platform where professionals and amateurs can enter their shots amongst a community of photographers from around the world for a chance to win $3k and an opportunity to show their work to an international audience. The awards have a $2k cash prize and title for first place, $1k for second place and the opportunity to be featured in the Monochrome Photography Awards Annual Book. Category winners and Honourable mentions will also be showcased at the online Winners Gallery and/or your name will be mentioned in the Monochrome Photography Awards Annual Book.

    2. PRIX PICTO DE LA PHOTOGRAPHIE DE MODE 2021

    The Prix Picto de la Photographie de Mode is a reference distinction for emerging talents in the fashion photography field. In addition to the exhibition produced by PICTO, the display offered by JCDecaux, the winner of the Prix Picto de la Photographie de Mode will receive a Leica camera. Keep in mind that the third prize includes a one-day workshop with Paolo Roversi, plus a print signed by the photography master himself.

    3. INTERNATIONAL LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 2021

    The main aim of the Award is to discover the Top 101 landscape photographs of the year. This gives you a place in the exclusive book which is published online and can be purchased as a hard-cover paper publication. There is $10k in cash prizes for the top three photographs and top three photographers (requiring a portfolio of at least four entries), plus a printed copy of the book from Momento Pro.

    4. LIFE FRAMER 

    Life Framer is a unique photography competition and a renowned platform for discovering and exhibiting contemporary photography. By entering you can gain widespread exposure, get your work exhibited around the world, and win cash prizes along the way. Competitions are running monthly so if you don’t make it for this month’s, you can always consider the briefs available for the rest of the year.

    5. LENSCULTURE CRITICS’ CHOICE 2021

    Critics’ Choice 2021 is designed to maximize exposure and opportunities for talented photographers who are ready for the global stage and international markets. The awards include an Online Solo Exhibition, feature in Critics’ Choice 2021 Photobook, cash prizes for the top ten photographers, global media coverage, and more.

    The Mobile Photo Awards is the longest running international competition open exclusively to photographs shot & edited on all mobile phones and tablets.

    7. PASSEPARTOUT PHOTO PRIZE

    Passepartout Photo Prize is an international photography contest born to promote and widen the exposure of emerging photographers. The contest aims to support the development of talented photographers from all over the world by providing 1,000 euros in monetary awards every year, exhibition opportunities in a prestigious venue in the heart of Rome, Italy, publication opportunities and more. It is the perfect platform to start your career in contemporary art and photography industries on an international scale. Every year the contest announces multiple calls for entries and select a winner of each edition.

    8. SMITHSONIAN MAGAZINE 19TH ANNUAL PHOTO CONTEST 

    Smithsonian Magazine has put out a call for entries for its 19th Annual Photo Contest looking for photographs that can range from a captivating portrait of a family member, to a moon-drenched landscape, to movement captured at just the right time.  There’s a Grand Prize of $2,500, six category prizes of $500 each and a Reader’s Choice award of $500.

    9. THE VOYAGE TRAVEL AWARDS 2021

    The ultimate travel award for creatives.  You can enter your creative works relating to travel across the fields of photography, video, architecture and interior design to win public recognition and cash prizes. There are two Grand Prize winners for each discipline receiving cash prizes of $1000 for professional winners and $500 for non-professional/student winners.

    10. INTERCONNECTED 2021 BY THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF BIOLOGY

    ‘Interconnected’ is the theme of this year’s Royal Society of Biology Photography Competition. The competition is looking for photographs capturing how life on Earth is connected. Your work could depict the relationships between living things or of a living thing with its environment, or consider the exchanges between different species. The top prize is £1,000 and the Young Photographer of the Year is £500.
